Robyn's Pond Newsletter February 2008

Last Updated: 3/9/08

==================================================
Introduction and Miscellaneous:
==================================================

If you have something pond-related that you want to share (information, jokes, web sites, pond secrets and tidbits, something pond-related for sale), let me know, and I will add it to the next newsletter. What topics would you like me to cover? Do you have a question that I can answer or pose to others in the next newsletter?

Today, 2/2/08, we got a new kitten named Tinkerbelle. The last kitten we got was Gino in 1999. The new kitten's web site is at http://www.fishpondinfo.com/cats/tinkie.htm

Happenings at Robyn's Ponds:
==================================================

1. On 1/6/08, I didn't do much around the ponds. It was a nice 50 degrees F in the air. The 1800 gallon still had some ice melting so it was at 35 degrees F while the 153 gallon was a toasty 47 degrees F. I topped off the ponds and collected some leaves.

2. On 1/8/08, I got a new fake heron in the mail to replace my old one with a big hole in its back. This new one though is very wobbly as the screws they put in the legs aren't long enough to keep it stable. I took a photo of the two herons together to show how faded the old one is and how dark (and not natural) the new one is (a link is above to the photos). They are otherwise identical.

3. On 1/13/08, I squirted off the flosses and tidied up around the pond (which means mostly getting some leaves here and there from the million to choose). The 1800 gallon was at 40 degrees F and the 153 gallon at 47 degrees F.

4. On 1/17/08, we got 5 inches of snow at my house while I was at work. The pond nets sagged down into the water. The next day, most of it melted.

5. On 1/20/08, I did not do much around the pond. The air temperature was 17 degrees F at dawn and barely above 20 degrees F when I went out there. The thermometer in the 1800 gallon pond was frozen in. The one in the 153 gallon read 43 degrees F. The de-icer and air stone in there are keeping basically that entire pond liquid still. I added a few buckets of water to the 50 gallon tub pond but that was about it.

6. The morning of 1/21/08, it was the coldest so far this season, 12 degrees F. The waterfall was still running fine but the rest of the pond was frozen over.

7. On 1/27/08, the 1800 gallon was still mostly frozen despite an air temperature of 38 degrees F. So, I didn't get in to squirt off the floss. The net is frozen in snow around the edges and prevents me from getting into the pond even if that area is free of ice. I could get in from the waterfall itself in an emergency. I added water to the 1800 gallon pond and tub ponds. The 153 gallon pond's thermometer read 43 degrees F.
