Robyn's Pond Blog for February 2024

Last Updated: 3/4/24

1. On 2/4/24 at 3:15 pm, the air temperature was 52 degrees F. The 1800 gallon pond was at 50 degrees F, and the 153 gallon pond was at 46 degrees F. I did not get in the pond. I removed some leaves and put in some water and additives. That was about it.

2. I did pond chores on 2/11/24 at 1:47 pm. The air temperature was 52 degrees F with light drizzle and no wind. The 1800 gallon pond was at 54 degrees F, and the 153 gallon pond was at 46 degrees F. I removed the filter floss and squirted them off. I squirted off the bioballs. There are always frogs in there but there was not even one so that is a bad sign. I put a new air stone on the airline in the big pond because it had come off, and I could not find the one that is in the pond somewhere. I put in additives to the big pond (baking soda, BZT, PondZyme, and koi clay) and topped off all the ponds.

I wanted to change out the 20 gallon tub pond knowing that rain is coming soon, and that means wood frog eggs. There was so much multiflora rose around the pond that I could not get close so I kind of went to town on the weeds and spent and hour clearing the weeds so I could get to the ponds.

3. I had the day off on 2/12/24. I put pond salt and Koizyme in the big pond which I forgot the day before.

4. There was 3 inches of wet snow on the ground the morning of 2/17/24. It was beautiful, hiding the evils of the world. For example, when I look at my pond from the house, beyond that, the neighbor built a horse arena that is a few hundred feet long and replaced dozens of beautiful trees. When the light hits the aluminum roof, it blinds me. So, with the snow on the trees, it didn't exist for one morning. The snow is melting fast so it will be gone soon.

5. I did some quick pond work on 2/18/24 but it was too cold with remaining snow and ice to do much. At 1:53 pm, the air temperature was 42 degrees F. The 1800 gallon pond was at 42 degrees F, and the 153 gallon pond was at 44 degrees F. I did not get in the big pond. I put additives and water in the big pond. There are a lot of rosy red and fathead minnows in the 153 gallon pond that were born last year. It is going to be hard to clean the pond out without harming them because they are pretty small still.

6. I didn't get to pond work on 2/25/24 until 3:06 pm. The air temperature was 48 degrees F. The 1800 gallon pond was at 44 degrees F, and the 153 gallon pond was at 47 degrees F. I bailed out the 20 gallon tub pond (nothing was alive in there) and refilled it in preparation for wood frog egg season. I got in the big pond to take out the filter floss and squirted them off. I removed a dead two inch pickerel frog from the big pond.
