Robyn's Pond Blog for July 2023

Last Updated: 8/9/23

1. At 12:35 pm on 7/2/23, the air temperature was 84 degrees F with 100% humidity. The 1800 gallon pond's thermometer read 77 degrees F while the one in the 153 galllon pond read 72 degrees F. I removed the PondMaster system in the 153 gallon pond and replaced it with a new one of the same kind as the pump had been working off and on and not at full strength, and the tubing between the filter and pump was damaged so I just decided to get an entire new one going and use the old one as a back up.

2. I did pond work on 7/9/23 at 11:00 am. The air temperature ws 80 degrees F. The 1800 gallon pond was at 79 degrees F while the 153 gallon pond was at 75 degrees F. I squirted all the filter materials but changed the main filter floss around the big pump. I changed the Ammocarb and oyster shell in mesh laundry bags. I removed the two gallon pot where I had recently added a new pickerel rush, and the raccoons spilled it all. The plant was not seen again. The electric pond lights have died due to ants living in them, and I cannot afford to have them fixed. Flashlights it is for winter like it used to be!

3. I started pond work at 11:11 on 7/16/23 when it was 75 degrees F. The 1800 gallon pond was at 78 degrees F, and the 153 gallon pond was at 76 degrees F. I changed the PondMaster filters, topped off the smaller ponds, put the liquid Bt in the smaller ponds for mosquito control like I do weekly (but usually don't mention), and squirted off the Matala mats in the Biosteps filter. Then, my family came over (they never tell me when to expect them) so I had to stop working on the pond and didn't get back to it until 5:23 pm when the 1800 gallon pond was at 80 degrees F. I got in the big pond in my swim suit to squirt off all the filter flosses and the bioballs and lava rock in the biofilter. The pump intake for the Biosteps filter had imploded as the filter floss was gone/missing. I put on a new pump intake, a new piece of floss, and closed it in a mesh filter bag so the spawning fish won't remove it. The goldfish had been spawning a lot this week. I can see baby rosy red minnows in the 153 gallon pond. I only have one adult rosy red (the rest are fathead minnows which is the same species but gray/brown) so she has been busy!

I didn't fertilize my surviving waterlily but it had two nice yellow flowers on it! It's too bad I was too busy and stressed to take photos (let alone do anything with the photos since I haven't pulled photos off my digital camera in a year!). I am so busy and behind on everything!

4. I did some pond work on 7/23/23 starting at 12:32 pm. The air temperature was 80 degrees F. The 1800 gallon pond was at 76 degrees F, and the 153 gallon pond was at 74 degrees F. I squirted off all the filter materials. I fertilized the waterlilies.

5. On 7/30/23 at 12:52 pm, the air temperature was 80 degrees F. The 1800 gallon pond was at 79 degrees F, and the 153 gallon pond was at 77 degrees F. I squirted all the filter materials, put in additives, and topped off the ponds.
