Robyn's Pond Blog for October 2023

Last Updated: 11/6/23

1. I did pond work on 10/1/23. At 12:45 pm, it was 76 degrees F outside. The 1800 gallon pond's thermometer read 67 degrees F, and the 153 gallon pond's thermometer read 68 degrees F. I squirted off all the filter materials around the pumps and put in water and additives.

2. At 2:24 pm on 10/8/23, the air temperature was only 58 degrees F so we finally had a bit of a cool down. I run hot so I finally didn't feel hot. The 1800 gallon pond was at 60 degrees F, and the 153 gallon pond was at 63 degrees F. I changed the PondMaster filters. I squirted off the Biosteps Matala. I took the filter floss out of the pond around the three pumps. I squirted off the floss for the two smaller pumps and changed to new floss for the big pump. I squirted out the bags of bioballs and lava rock. I changed the bags of carbon/zeolite mix and oyster shell. When I started the pumps back up, the auxiliary pump didn't go! I tried shaking it, turning it off and on, and, then, finally a few minutes after I just left it on, it decided to kick in. I added water and additives to the ponds.

3. At 1:32 pm on 10/15/23, it was 55 degrees F outside. The 1800 gallon pond was at 56 degrees F, and the 153 gallon pond was at 59 degrees F. I squirted off all the filter materials, put in additives, and did not need to add water due to rain the day before. I put pieces of rigid PVC over the flexible hose from the PondMaster filter to the MagDrive pump because it kept bending, and the bell fountain kept laying on the water. The only PVC I had were pieces that I had cut a year before for a project that never happened. A single piece would have been much better.

4. I didn't get to the pond work until 3:30 pm on 10/22/23. The air temperature was 58 degrees F. The 1800 gallon pond was at 56 degrees as was the 153 gallon pond. I squirted all the filter materials, collected leaves off the nets, put in additives, and topped off with water.

5. On 10/25/23, the pump running the Biosteps filter was fountaining into the air when I came home. I just unplugged that pump as I intended to put it up in four days anyway. Unfortunately, it is going to be incredibly warm in the 80's for the next three days. I just didn't want to have to get in the pond to fix it.

6. I started pond work on 10/29/23 at 11:19 am. The air temperature was 66 degrees F. The 1800 gallon pond was at 64 degrees F as was the 153 gallon pond. I removed the Biosteps filter, squirted out the Matala, and put everything on the porch to dry (the raccoons would move it overnight but at least they did not eat it like they chew on most everything else). I spent a while getting the masses of leaves off the pond nets. I squirted off all the filter materials, put in additives, and topped off the ponds.
