1. I did some pond work on 12/1/24. I did not get in the pond this day. The air temperature was only 38 degrees F at 1:56 pm! The 1800 gallon pond's thermometer read 40 degrees F while that in the 153 gallon pond read 44 degrees F. I raked up half a dozen wheel barrows of leaves from the back yard, not far from the ponds. I added additives and water to the ponds.
2. On 12/8/24, at 2:28 pm, it was a warm 58 degrees F but windy. It had been cold recently so the thermometer in the 1800 gallon pond only read 40 degrees F, and the one in the 153 gallon pond was warmer at 46 degrees F. I squirted off the filter floss around the one remaining pump feeding the biofilter, and I squirted off the bags of bioballs and lava rock. There were two frogs in there. I put a green frog who was in the top of the filter into the main pond and left a pickerel frog in the bottom of the filter.
3. On 12/15/24, at 11:09 am, the air temperature was only 36 degrees F but it had been warmer for the preceeding days. The 1800 gallon pond was at 42 degrees F, and the 153 gallon pond was at 45 degrees F. I did not get in the pond. I just put in additives and water.
4. At 11:51 am on 12/22/24, it was only 30 degrees F outside! The 1800 gallon pond was at 39 degrees F with ice around the thermometer, and the 153 gallon pond was at 44 degrees F. I did nothing but check the temperature. As the temperature was going to plunge on Sunday, 12/22/24, I put water in the big pond the day before on 12/21/24.
5. In contrast to the week before, on 12/29/24, it was a warm 56 degrees F at 10:15, and I was in short sleeves so I could do pond work. The 1800 gallon pond was at 54 degrees F, and the 153 gallon pond was at 45 degrees F. I am not sure why there was such a large difference. I got in the big pond so I could remove and squirt off the filter flosses. It had been three weeks.
