My Nano Reefs Part Nineteen - 9/13 to 2/14

Last Updated: 6/1/14

On 9/7/13, I did the usual. The Aiptasia in the 6 gallon tank were in the usual original location, the new left location, and now one growing in amongst the zooanthids! I treated them but they are spreading.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 77.3 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
6 Gallon Tank: 74.9 degrees F, 1.026 SG, pH 8.0
Make up water: 73.7 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2

I was very surprised on 9/12/13 in the morning to notice a small starfish on the front glass of my 12 gallon tank! I had seen one something like a year ago and then assumed he did not survive but here was one! The little starfish is still very small.

On 9/14/13, I did the usual. I calibrated the pH meter.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 79.4 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 75.7 degrees F, 1.0255 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 73.5 degrees F, 1.026 SG, pH 8.4

On 9/21/13, I did the usual. I did not find any Aiptasia!

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 80.2 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 7.9
6 Gallon Tank: 77.4 degrees F, 1.026 SG, pH 7.9
Make up water: 74.4 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

On 9/28/13, I did the usual. I replaced the 50 W heater in the 12 gallon nano reef with a 50 W Visi-therm heater. The old one was set at 68 degrees F but the tank was always at least 80 degrees in the morning before the lights even came on.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 80.6 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 77.3 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 74.0 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

On 10/5/13, I did the usual. I treated two Aiptasia on the original rock from whence they came. They were pretty good size too.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 79.0 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 75.8 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.0
Make up water: 73.6 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

On 10/12/13, I did the usual. I treated three Aiptasia on the original rock yet again. I calibrated the pH meter.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 80.0 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
6 Gallon Tank: 76.4 degrees F, 1.0255 SG, pH 8.0
Make up water: 81.8 degrees F, 1.0245 SG, pH 8.2

On 10/19/13, I did the usual. I treated one Aiptasia on the original rock.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 78.8 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 75.2 degrees F, 1.026 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 73.3 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2

On 10/26/13, I did the usual. I treated one Aiptasia on the dead coral at the left of the tank. There is another one on the right but it is too close to other animals.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 78.1 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 74.9 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 74.0 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

On 11/2/13, I did the usual.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 79.2 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3
6 Gallon Tank: 75.4 degrees F, 1.0255 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: "Forgot to record!" degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH "Forgot to record!"

On 11/9/13, I did the usual. I calibrated the pH meter. I treated two Aiptasia that were pretty big living in the top of my zooanthids. With the pump off, and my head above the tank, I discovered the largest Aiptasia that I have ever had. It was growing on the back side of the rock. I put Kalkwasser on that one too.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 77.5 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 75.6 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 73.8 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

On 11/16/13, I did the usual. I found a few Aiptasia including the remains of the big one from last week and treated those. I got a cut from a vermetid snail. It is a stationary snail (not a worm as you would think) that lives in a hard calcium tube and spits out a string which catches food. Then, it reels the food back in to the tube. Anyway, the tubes are small and sharp, and I cut my hand on them when trying to clean the tank. There are probably a hundred of them in the 6 gallon tank but I think none in the 12 gallon tank.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 77.1 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 74.6 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 73.0 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2

I was an hour away from starting to clean the saltwater tanks on 11/23/13 when my chronically ill mother finally decided to go to the hospital. I went with her by ambulance and stayed with her alone as she died early the next morning. I got home before dawn, told my father, showered, called my brother and the funeral home, fed the animals, slept for about an hour, cleaned the turtle tank, and then got to the saltwater tanks before going to make funeral arrangements. It's all a blur.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 77.4 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
6 Gallon Tank: 74.9 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 72.6 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

On 11/30/13, I did the usual. I found three Aiptasia in the 6 gallon tank and treated them.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 77.5 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 74.1 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 73.5 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2

On 12/7/13, I did the usual. I calibrated the pH meter. I found four Aiptasia in the 6 gallon tank and treated them.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 79.3 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.0
6 Gallon Tank: 77.3 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 74.3 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.4

On 12/14/13, I did the usual. There were Aiptasia but I didn't treat them.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 77.8 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 74.7 degrees F, 1.026 SG, pH 8.2
Make up water: 73.7 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

On 12/21/13, I did the usual. I treated two Aiptasia (nope, I didn't take them out for ice cream).

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 78.5 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 75.2 degrees F, 1.0255 SG, pH 8.2
Make up water: 73.9 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.4

On 12/28/13, I did the usual. I treated two huge Aiptasia at another location near the front right of the tank. I don't see how I didn't notice them before unless they moved there.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 77.3 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 75.7 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 73.1 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

On 1/4/14, I did the usual. I treated three Aiptasia at various spots. They just do not give up! I calibrated the pH meter.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 76.7 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3
6 Gallon Tank: 74.0 degrees F, 1.0255 SG, pH 8.2
Make up water: 74.0 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

On 1/11/14, I did the usual. I treated one Aiptasia.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 76.7 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 75.1 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
Make up water: 73.3 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

On 1/18/14, I did the usual. I treated three medium Aiptasia and a group of babies.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 76.6 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 74.6 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 73.8 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

On 1/19/14, I went to a fish store. This is like sending an alcoholic to the liquor store! I wanted to get two astraea snails for my 6 gallon reef which has probably no snails left as I haven't seen the nassarius snail in a while. In the same tank at the store with the snails were peppermint shrimp. The last time I tried them, they vanished in weeks but they were so cute, and I was too tempted. I got two of them who are having fun in the 6 gallon tank. They are so active and comical that I could watch them all day. I hope they eat some of those Aiptasia and grow big and strong.

On 1/25/14, I did the usual. I didn't find any Aiptasia so the shrimp must be doing their job!

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 75.8 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
Gallon Tank: 73.1 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
Make up water: 72.9 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

On 2/1/14, I did the usual. When I was calibrating the pH meter, the pH 7.0 solution spilled. It said it still calibrated but I'm not so sure. I have to order more solution. I didn't find any Aiptasia and will stop saying that unless they show up again.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 75.4 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
6 Gallon Tank: 74.9 degrees F, 1.0255 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 73.8 degrees F, 1.0255 SG, pH 8.3

On 2/8/14, I did the usual.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 76.5 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
6 Gallon Tank: 74.5 degrees F, 1.026 SG, pH 8.2
Make up water: 73.7 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

On 2/15/14, I did the usual.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 78.2 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
6 Gallon Tank: 76.6 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 74.0 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.3

I noticed around 2/19/14, that one of the two new peppermint shrimp has eggs under her, a ton of eggs actually. As before, when they hatch, the babies will not stand a chance, being harmed by the filter and eaten by the corals, crab, and their parents.

On 2/22/14, I did the usual.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 77.8 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.0
6 Gallon Tank: 74.7 degrees F, 1.026 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 74.3 degrees F, 1.0255 SG, pH 8.2
