My Nano Reefs Part Twenty-Four - 1/18 to present

Last Updated: 3/11/24

On 1/6/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.0255, and 1.0255 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 70 degrees F.

On 1/13/18, the salinities were 1.026, 1.0255, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 73 degrees F.

On 1/20/18, the salinities were 1.026, 1.025, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. I forgot to write down the temperatures.

On 1/29/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.025, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 72 degrees F.

On 2/3/18, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 72 degrees F.

On 2/10/18, the salinities were 1.0255, 1.025, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 72 degrees F.

On 2/17/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.025, and 1.023 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 74 degrees F. I had trouble getting the saltwater to mix. I weigh the salt though so once fully dissolved, the salinity should always be perfect. I heat the make-up water to about 75 degrees F and stir it on a stir plate but the magnetic stir bar kept stopping (the cat litter bucket I use is not flat on the bottom in the center where the stir bar sits over the magnet).

On 2/24/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 80 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 74 degrees F.

On 3/2/18, we had a horrible wind storm that brought down trees. The power was out for 10 hours. I thought it would be out for days. I had the generator going for the aquarium pumps but the temperature started to go down in the house and tanks. I plugged in the heater for the 6 gallon tank to the generator power strip (not enough room for more with four filters on there). An hour later, and the tank was 10 degrees F above the setting. I opened the lid, and a horrible burning metal scent met my nose. I lifted up the heater, and it was in pieces. The glass had shattered with metal and glass all down in the sump. I had to use my bare hands to pick it out because the fit was too tight for gloves or the aquarium tweezers. It was a mess. The corals were not happy. I ordered a new heater.

On 3/3/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 74 degrees F.

On 3/10/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F. I installed the new heater in the 6 gallon tank. It's a Cobalt Aquatics Neo-Therm 25 W. It has no glass so it won't break like the old one.

On 3/17/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 3/24/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 3/31/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.0255, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 4/7/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 80 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 77 degrees F.

On 4/14/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 82 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F. The 12 gallon tank was clear when I fed Nemo, and it was opaque from some kind of white bacterial bloom a few hours later. Luckily, I was doing the water change that afternoon. By the evening feeding, the water was clear.

On 4/21/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 4/30/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 80 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 5/19/18, the salinities were 1.0255, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. I forgot to record the tank temperatures.

On 5/26/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.0255, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 84 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F. I changed the lamp in the 6 gallon nano reef.

On 6/2/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.025, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. I did not record temperatures. I changed the lamps in the 12 gallon nano reef.

On 6/9/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.025, and 1.0255 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 85 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 80 degrees F. The tanks are getting super hot while the room is no more than 75 degrees F. I think the new lamps are hotter!

On 6/16/18, the salinities were 1.0255, 1.025, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 84 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 80 degrees F.

On 8/4/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.0255, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 85 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 80 degrees F. The air temperature was 76 degrees F.

On 8/11/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.0255, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 84 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 80 degrees F. The air temperature was 76 degrees F.

On 8/18/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.025, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 84 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 80 degrees F. I do not know why I am still testing and recording these things. Nobody cares.

On 8/25/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 84 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F.

On 9/1/18, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 83 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F.

On 9/29/18, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.024 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 84 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 80 degrees F.

On 9/29/18, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 82 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F.

10/6/18 record is missing! I think I wrote over it with the 10/13/18 record.

On 10/13/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 82 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F.

On 10/20/18, the salinities were 1.026, 1.025, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 80 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 77 degrees F.

On 10/27/18, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 11/3/18, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 80 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 11/12/18, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 11/17/18, the salinities were 1.0255, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 11/24/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.0255, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 12/1/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.0255, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 12/8/18, the salinities were 1.0255, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 12/10/18, I went to a pet store with a lot of aquariums for the first time in a few years. I wanted to get a few small hermit crabs. I only had the one electric blue one left in the 12 gallon tank. I also wanted to get some small snails. All they had though was one red tip hermit crab who was so tiny, you can barely see him! I named him Ichabod and put him in the 6 gallon tank reef tank after drip acclimation.

On 12/15/18, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 12/22/18, the salinities were 1.0255, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 77 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 12/29/18, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 1/5/19, the salinities were 1.025, 1.025, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 77 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

The next day, I noticed the lights were flickering on the 12 gallon tank so I pulled the plug that goes in to the external ballast. I could not get it back in so I turned off the switch on the ballast and tried to get it in. Even though the switch was off, it popped, smoked, and turned black at the connection. I cut the power at the outlet, got it back in, and tried turning it on but only one of the lights was barely on so it was shot! I am in the process of trying to find a replacement hood and ballast. They do not manufacture the original ballast anymore. It was defective anyway! I had to replace a part in it years ago. I put my extra old 6 gallon hood from the reef tank as well as a freshwater 10 gallon fluorescent strip on top of the tank in the mean time. They are supported by a piece of plexiglass that I took off my old rabbit hutch outside (my rabbits have all died). So, I am waiting to fix this!

On 1/12/19, the new lid and ballast came for the 12 gallon tank so I installed those. The salinities were 1.026, 1.0255, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 1/19/19, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 1/26/19, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 2/2/19, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 2/9/19, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.0255 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F. I noticed that the green star polyps had not opened much in a few days in the 12 gallon tank. I think they are dying off which happens every few years, and they regrow from small pieces here and there.

On 2/16/19, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F. I cut off about a quarter of the green star polyps which appear to have died off in the 12 gallon tank. The diatoms (brown algae) and hairy green algae are growing like mad without the star polyps actively feeding although a few little green polyps are sticking out here and there. The die off the star polyps though came just in time to perhaps save the brain coral which has been drastically shrinking as the star polyps enveloped it despite weekly trimming around the brain coral. The other corals should also benefit from more available light and nutrients. I am noting that I have not seen the little hermit crab in the 6 gallon tank in a few months so I am afraid he is gone. My only surviving hermit crab is the blue and black one in the 12 gallon tank. He is a beauty!

On 2/23/19, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.0255 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F. I removed more of the green star polyps from the 12 gallon tank although a few green polyps did show themselves. It certainly has not opened in its full glory in the last three weeks though. The diatoms and hairy green algae are having a field day with the green star polyps out of commission and not hogging all the light and nutrients.

On 3/2/19, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F. Some of the green star polyps are starting to come out but not many and not all the way.

On 3/9/19, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.0255 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F. The green star polyps have shown no sign of life now for over a month so I pulled out most of them. The fact that they came out easily seems to indicate that they are dead, and yet, there were a few tiny peaks of green on one clump that I put in there just in case. The death of the green star polyps does mean that now the brain coral might survive, and I can get some more corals. The green star polyps live on in a piece that is in the six gallon tank, and now it's starting to take off.

On 3/16/19, the salinities were 1.026, 1.0265, and 1.0255/1.025 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up waters. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 77 degrees F. I cleaned the 6 gallon tank first, and I had to try to get the pump to stop buzzing. Then, I started on the 12 gallon tank. I made two batches of new water because I did a 100% cleaning of the 12 gallon nano tank. I removed half of the old water without stirring things up. I put the three pieces of live rock, Nemo, the electric blue hermit crab, one zooanthid colony, and one leather coral in two buckets to wait while I cleaned. The brain coral was attached to the biggest piece of live rock. So, only one fish, one crab, and three corals were alive plus all the tiny critters so it was a good time for a total cleaning before I try to restock. The diatoms have been growing like mad since the green star polyps died. I rinsed the gravel in the dirty water and then some fresh saltwater. I put that back with a layer of fresh aragonite gravel. The water was incredibly cloudy so, while I did put in the live rock, I waited over an hour to put the fish and crab back. Nemo was still gaspy. And, it looked like he had an instant case of some horrible fish disease but it was just debris stuck on a bunch of slime that he expelled due to stress. He was fine by the next day. I tried to do things as gently as I could. The diatoms grew back within 24 hours! I am going to order some new snails, crabs, and corals soon.

On 3/21/19, I received three small zooanthid colonies, I dripped acclimated them, and I added them to the 12 gallon nano reef.

On 3/23/19, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.0255 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F. I received a lot of new animals for my aquariums which I drip acclimated. I added the following animals:

To the 6 gallon nano reef = 2 sexy shrimp, 1 cerith snail, 2 astraea snails, 1 zebra hermit crab

To the 12 gallon nano reef = 3 cerith snails, 2 astraea snails, 1 blue hermit crab, 1 yellow hermit crab, 1 scarlet reef hermit crab, and 1 pulsing xenia

Some of the snails seemed lifeless but most started to move around in a few days. I think two cerith snails in the 12 gallon tank died.

On 3/30/19, the salinities were 1.026, 1.027, and 1.0265 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 4/6/19, the salinities were 1.026, 1.0265, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F.

On 4/13/19, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 80 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.

On 4/20/19, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.0255 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 81 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 77 degrees F. One of the zooanthids came off so I had to reapply some reef epoxy to get it to stick again.

On 4/27/19, the salinities were 1.0255, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 80 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F. All the new corals have started to finally open in the 12 gallon tank, and the remaining pieces of green star polyps in there have also come back to life! That's great news for them but maybe not so much for the brain coral that they had previously been attacking and almost killed.

On 5/3/19, the salinities were 1.025, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 82 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F. The spaghetti leather coral came off the live rock so I had to reapply some reef epoxy to get it to stick again.

By 5/9/19, the pulsing xenia is finally fully open but it does not pulse (yet).

On 5/11/19, the salinities were 1.026, 1.026, and 1.026 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 82 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F. On 2/23/21, I added two astrea snails and one peppermint shrimp to the 12 gallon nano reef. I drip acclimated them. The tank now has a lot of Aiptasia anemones. The fish store only had large, gravid peppermint shrimp. I named her Cardi-B. I saw her that night and never again until I cleaned the tank on 2/27/21 and found her big body. RIP. The snails have done okay though. The anemones rejoiced.

On 2/25/21, I came home to find the 6 gallon nano reef's thermometer at 84 degrees F. The heater malfunctioned. I had to throw it away. I had a spare glass 25W heater that I put in there.

The morning of 3/26/22, when I first went in to the laundry room, something sounded wrong. I found that the 6 gallon nano reef tank was missing a gallon of saltwater that was all over the counter, behind the other tanks (under lots of cords where I could not reach), down on the floor, and out to the rug in the other room. I found that the tube connecting the pump to the return had popped off. The pump was fountaining, and water leaked out the seam between the tank proper and the lid. What a mess! It was an easy fix but the tank had to wait until late morning before I could get new saltwater mixed up and refill the tank enough to run the pump. In the mean time, I had put the heater in the main part of the tank as the sump and main tank were no longer joined (water too low).

I changed to a new RO system back in December of 2023 like I do every three years, and I had nothing but problems. Instead of 3 or 4 hours to make 3.5 gallons, it was taking like 8 hours! I had it running overnight. They had replaced the fast flush valve with a solid valve but did not change their instructions. I did not realize this and probably damaged the RO membrane so they would not help me or replace it. Instead, I just bought another one, this one rated for 75 GPD instead of 50 GPD. It was amazing! It only took a few hours to get the 3.5 gallons! Why did I not know about this before! They never explained it well on their web site, instructions, or in a flurry of e-mails that I had with them. I got a TDS meter (I have a conductivity meter at work) for home. The TDS from the laundry room sink was 53 ppm, and it was only 3 ppm after the RO, better than the 5 ppm or so I got from the 8 hour run on the previous RO.

On 2/17/24, the salinities were 1.023, 1.025, and 1.023 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 78 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F. I put a new thermometer in the 12 gallon tank since the suction cup would no longer stay put. I changed the lamp in the 6 gallon nano cube as I had one bulb left. Now, I have no bulbs for either tank (no longer made).

On 2/24/24, the salinities were 1.023, 1.025, and 1.023 for the 12 and 6 gallon tanks and the make-up water. The 12 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F, and the 6 gallon's thermometer read 76 degrees F.
