Robyn's Pond Blog for September 2024

Last Updated: 10/8/24

1. On 9/2/24 (Labor Day), I did pond chores at 12:55 pm. The air temperature was 75 degrees F, and it was finally not hot! The 1800 gallon pond was at 74 degrees F, and the 153 gallon pond was at 75 degrees F. I replaced the Luft pump with a new one because it has been making so much noise lately that you can here it 50 feet away. I fertilized the two surviving waterlilies. The one waterlily had maybe a total of three yellow flowers this year but I was at work most of the time they were showing off their glory. I squirted all the filter materials, put in additives, and topped the ponds off with water.

2. I did pond work on 9/8/24 at 1:10 pm. The air temperature was a nice 67 degrees F. The 1800 gallon pond was at 64 degrees F while the 153 gallon pond was at a warmer 68 degrees F. I squirted all the filter materials and the bioballs. I put in additives and topped the ponds off with water.

3. On 9/15/24 at 11:36 pm, the air temperature was 75 degrees F. The 1800 gallon pond was at 68 degrees F as was the 153 gallon pond. I squirted the Matala in the Biosteps filter. I squirted all the other filter materials, put in additives, and topped off the ponds with water.

4. On 9/17/24, my guinea pig, Princess Gina died.

5. On 9/22/24, at 10:08 am, the air temperature was 67 degrees F. Both ponds were at 70 degrees F. I removed the half net and ropes from the 1800 gallon pond. I changed the PondMaster filters. I squirted all the filter materials. I put in additives (including the first dose of Microlift Autumn prep) and water. I wrestled the full net onto the 1800 gallon pond. I managed to get my brother to help a bit with getting the sticks out and unfolding it. While he buried Princess Gina, I hammered in the stakes. I put the half net on the 153 gallon pond. I always feel better once the ponds are fully netted as the leaves are coming down due to drought.

6. On 9/29/24, I did pond work starting at 1:56 pm. The air temperature was 67 degrees F, and there was 100% humidity as we have finally been getting rain that we desperately needed (but now will not seem to stop). I wanted to change the bag of oyster shell but I could not find it! I did squirt all the filter materials and put in additives. The ponds did not need any water added to them. I was going to fertilize the lilies one last time but everything was too wet (the fertilizer pills turn to mush when they get wet).
