My Nano Reefs Part Twenty-One - 11/14 to 8/15

Last Updated: 12/1/15

On 11/8/14, I did the usual. I calibrated the pH meter. The first go through with the pH meter, I got 5.8, 5.9, and 6.2. I then let it sit for half an hour in the make-up water while I finished cleaning the turtle tank, and I got the results below.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 77.8 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 76.2 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
Make up water: 74.0 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.0

On 11/15/14, I did the usual. The first go through with the pH meter, I got 6.6, 6.7, and 6.7. I then let it sit for half an hour in the make-up water while I finished cleaning the 12 gallon tank, and I got the results below. I got a nice cut on my left hand from a vermitid snail. They are stationary snails that live in calcium tubes that are sharp as knives. They are interesting though in that they toss out tendrils with mucus on them to "fish" for food.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 77.5 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
6 Gallon Tank: 75.9 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: Forgot to record degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 7.9

On 11/22/14, I did the usual. The first go through with the pH meter, I got 6.6, 6.7, and 6.7. I then let it sit for half an hour in the make-up water while I finished cleaning the 12 gallon tank, and I got the results below.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 76.1 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2

On 11/29/14, I did the usual. The first go through with the pH meter, I got 6.5, 6.6, and 6.7. I then let it sit for half an hour in the make-up water while I finished cleaning the 12 gallon tank, and I got the results below.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 76.6 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
6 Gallon Tank: 75.7 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 73.5 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.0

On 12/6/14, I did the usual. I calibrated the pH meter, and the first go through, I got 5.6, 5.9, and 6.1. I then let it sit for half an hour in the make-up water while I finished cleaning the 12 gallon tank, and I got the results below. The difference is pH was drastic. You cannot rely on equipment. I cut back some of the green star polyps in the 12 gallon tank. They were blocking the light from the spaghetti leather coral. While cleaning the 12 gallon, Nemo bit me and actually ripped a tiny piece of skin off my hand, and I bled!

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 76.2 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.2
6 Gallon Tank: 75.4 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.1
Make up water: 73.8 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.0

On 12/13/14, I did the usual. For the first go through on the pH meter, I got 6.3, 6.4, and 6.5. I then let it sit for half an hour in the make-up water while I finished cleaning the 12 gallon tank, and I got the results below.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 76.5 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 7.8

Make up water: 73.5 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 7.9

On 1/10/15, I did the usual. I had my new pH meter. I calibrated it. This one goes to two decimal places. You will notice how much higher these readings are compared to the old meter. They are more realistic!

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 76.3 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.25
6 Gallon Tank: 75.1 degrees F, 1.0255 SG, pH 8.18

Make up water: 74.1 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.89

On 2/7/15, I did the usual. I calibrated the pH meter. Notice the decrease in pH as a result.

The water test results for the day were:
12 Gallon Tank: 77.7 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.05
6 Gallon Tank: 75.3 degrees F, 1.0255 SG, pH 8.01
Make up water: 73.6 degrees F, 1.025 SG, pH 8.19

On 5/16/15, I did the usual. I tested the pH twice. The first time, I got 7.63, 7.76, and 7.78. The second time, it gave those results below. One of the plug prongs on my stir plate fell off! It was only made circa 1960 or something! I have another stir plate from my old job (a throw away from there). I had to use it but I have to run it super slow, or the magnetic stir bar flies away from the center and just clunks around. As if one thing breaking wasn't hard enough, the air pump died. I use it to aerate the make up water. I went in search of an old one in the basement. I tried two before I gave up. Both of those put out air but none were strong enough to actually make bubbles come out the end of the line! I think I will have to buy a few air pumps and then go through and test the old ones and just actually throw them out instead of thinking that someday, in a pinch, they might actually be good for something! I changed the two lamps out in the 12 gallon nano reef tank. A few more chunks of plastic broke off the lid. Everything is falling apart!

On 7/11/15, I did the usual. I tested the pH twice. The first time, I got 7.42, 7.54, and 7.50. The meter is always wrong right after calibration when it should be the most right! The second time, it gave those results below. I put in a new Maxi Jet 900 in the 12 gallon tank because the flow seemed so low. It did not seem to make any difference! A few dozen worms died as a result. These were stationary worms with white calcium tubes and red feathery bodies. There is no way to move them off of something to which they are affixed. This made me very sad.
